This turned out to be a pretty straight forward novel about people in the real world dealing with modern-day problems. The Game is a vehicle to deliver a context for fantasy content and set up the conflict between the company and players. Game mechanics are mentioned but never explained. At no point do they talk about leveling, crafting, skill progression, skills, magic in any detail or any equipment or bonuses from it. It's a story, a damn good one, about MMORPG but not GameLit. It can only be considered GameLit in the way Draft Day was a football movie. Great novel and I real like both authors but think they need to change the category on it. Might just be me though and I am judmental.

As a gamer who started in the days of Atari, an early adopter for the recent VR comeback and someone who has worked in the Las Vegas gaming industry (as in gambling establishments) for over a decade, it was almost painful to read parts of this book. The basis of the story is good (Game devs vs unknowingly player), but there are so many individual plot problems that I had to stop reading several times. It’s written like the authors had the genre described to them as opposed to being gamers themselves. Here are the big 3:First and foremost, the game developer’s main motivation is unrealistic. The authors don’t seem to realize how streamers and eSports have already monetized gaming, or how micro transactions are a gold mine.Second, the authors have a hard time reconciling the limits of the VR hardware they are using (HMDs and haptic suits) with the action elements they are describing. Players throwing themselves into dodges, rolls and running, all without handheld controllers or treadmill. Also, two people somehow doing all of this while using virtual area boundaries within a small apartment living room. Finally, the MCs job drama. If a pit is open, there are going to be other dealers and management there. It’s never going to be a solo dealer holding down the fort. Also, Vegas casinos are all about user experience. In the two main chains all staff, even IT, receives specific training on that. There is no way a guest in distress would just be fobbed off on security.

I read a lot of lit.rpg. This was untypical because it emphasized the "lit" aspect. The book is character-driven rather than concentrating on character statistics and leveling. It was also refreshingly free of the grammar, spelling and word choice problems endemic to the genre. Reading was seamless. In short, I enjoyed this book and look forward to more collaborations between Natalie Grey and Michael Anderle.

A combination of real life stories, and the game in which people with budding friendships meet to share adventures and successes. Written in a mature and thoughtful manner, detailing real life choices and a game in which they can build a new life. Though levels and roles are occasionally mentioned, no game mechanics are introduced. The main character is a recent college graduate that rebuked family pressures, moved to Las Vegas, and was forced to deal blackjack to earn money. Talked into playing a new VR game, she begins to love the environment while finding her skills relevant, earning respect. Though the plot and story revolves around the MC, we also become involved in the lives of her friends. The authors have left room for a sequel or series. The series ARC is focused on a continuing game quest, people trying to prevent it's success, and consequences that may be triggered upon quest completion.

Great dialog, a nice story with enjoyable characters, terrrific editing. Unlike a lot of stuff in this niche, there aren't a ton of status screens/menus, and far less focus on game structure and mechanics except for specific aspects central to the social drama. It isn't too dark, it isn't full of exaggerated jerks or crazy villians, and is entirely plausible in its treatment of games, gamers, and corporate cultures. Also, thankfully, there's none of the (often badly written) gratuitous sex that has become prevalent in recent works. So, pts for being clean, fun, polished, and enjoyable. I liked that this was more character oriented rather than running up the page count with repetitive tables of game menus. I've also liked stories that depend more on the game structure, but this was a nice change.

What an awesome new series! Being 50, and not playing RPGs since Final Fantasy on my Game boy in the First Gulf War(yes, I beat it), I would've appreciated a glossary of acronyms. The story kept me hooked though. Well worth the read, especially if you already know what the acronyms mean. So, how about a glossary in the next book? I can't possibly be the only one who wants this! I can't wait for the next one! Keep churning out the awesome stories guys!

So many eloquent reviews. Here is my dumbed down version. Great Characters (as always from this team) engaging story (again, to be expected) very relatable story, a nice sprinkling of humor. Made me think about opening my WOW account. Really looking forward to the next in the series,

So, right up front, I’m not a gamer. I’ve read other LitRPG and some are good, others not so much. I picked this up because I enjoyed the authors’ other works and this one is better than others I’ve read in this genre in my opinion! The characters are engaging, there isn’t too much jargon (although there is some) to confuse the uninitiated and the plot rips right along. Worth your time and money.
